There were early introductions of Suffolks and Norfolks by Samuel Marsden and others but they apparently had little input even into Illawarras.The first recorded breeder of Red Polls in Australia was James Graves a Victorian Minister for Customs, sometime around 1870, but even he bought them from another Australian herd and there are records of other importations.

However the most influential of the earlier herds was that of Major Phillip Charley of Belmont Park, Richmond in NSW, founded in 1891, near the present Richmond TAFE. Accurate records were kept of this herd and this guaranteed its influence on other herds. From this beginning Red Polls have spread throughout Australian environments as pure breds and in crossbreeds.
